Instagram for personal trainers: what actually works
Instagram can send you clients, but only if you use each part of it for what it's good at. Most trainers post randomly, see little, and conclude it doesn't work. The trainers who grow treat Reels, the feed, and Stories as three different tools with three different jobs. Here's how each one works and what to post.
How the algorithm actually decides who sees you
Instagram shows a new post to a small group first, watches how they respond (watch time, saves, shares, comments), and expands the reach if it performs well. Two things follow from that. Your first line or first second has to stop the scroll, because a weak hook kills a post before it gets a chance. And saves and shares matter more than likes, because they tell Instagram the content was genuinely useful.
Reels: for reaching people who don't follow you yet
Reels are how you get in front of strangers. Instagram pushes short video to non-followers, so this is your growth engine. Keep them short, lead with a hook in the first second (a common mistake, a surprising tip, a "stop doing this"), demonstrate quickly, and end with a reason to follow or act. Post Reels consistently. This is the format that grows an account.
The feed and carousels: for depth and saves
Posts and multi-slide carousels are where you go deeper: a step-by-step, a myth you're busting, a breakdown of how to do something. These earn saves, which the algorithm loves and which keep your knowledge in front of people who'll come back to it. Carousels are a great home for the educational content that builds trust over time.
Stories: for the followers you already have
Stories don't grow your reach much, but they keep the people who already follow you connected to you day to day. Behind-the-scenes moments, a quick client win, a question sticker, a poll. This is how a follower turns into someone who feels like they know you, which is who actually hires you. Show up in Stories regularly, even casually.
The three kinds of content that keep working
- Quick tips. Short, useful, educational. These prove you know your stuff and they travel.
- Results and transformations. Honest before-and-after and client wins build trust like nothing else. Keep them truthful and get permission first.
- Behind the scenes. You, your personality, your day. People hire a person, so let them see one.
Turn engagement into conversations
When a post does well, move the interest into a real conversation. A simple, honest call to action ("comment the word PLAN and I'll send you the free guide") turns passive viewers into people in your messages, where you can actually talk. You can do this by hand at first. The point is to not let attention evaporate: give people a next step off the post.
The short version
- Reels reach new people, carousels earn saves and trust, Stories keep your current followers close. Use each for its job.
- Hook in the first second. Saves and shares matter more than likes.
- Rotate three content types: quick tips, honest results, and behind the scenes.
- Give strong posts a next step so attention turns into conversations.
